5 Amusing Facts PHP Developers Should Know

  1. PHP, theRoot of the Internet Revolution:

RasmusLerdorf, a Danish Canadian programmer, designed this scripting language– PHP, which originally stood for Personal Home Page, but now it stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, it is the recursive acronym.  Designed to replace a set of Perl scripts to maintain Lerdorf’s Personal Home Pages, Hypertext Preprocessor became one of the pillars for the Internet revolution in history since 1995.

As we tend to evolve every time, PHP also evolved in the later stages. In 1997, ZeevSuraski and AndiGutmans paved the way to PHP 3 and 4. They rewrote the parser and formed the base of PHP 3 and changed the name as it is today, that is, Hypertext Preprocessor. Public testing for PHP 3 began after that and then it was officially launched in June 1998. In 1999, Zend Engine came to existence after Suraski and Gutmans rewrote the PHP’s core.

Later, he founded the Zend Technologies in Ramat Gan, Israel. In the year 2000, on May, PHP 4 first came, powered by the Zend Engine 1.0. Eight years of continuous upgradation, PHP 4 reached to the version of 4.4.9.

ZeevSuraski and AndiGutmans rewrote the PHP’s core and hence producing the Zend Engine in 1999. They founded the Zend Technologies in Israel. Zend Engine 1.0 was first used to power the PHP 4 on May 22, 2000. Then came the new Zend Engine II that powered the PHP 5 on July 14th, 2004. PHP 5 was a beast compared to the bygone PHPs.  It included new features such as the PHP Data Objects extension or PDO, improved support of object-oriented programming, also OOP and brought numerous performance enhancements. PHP 5 became the only stable version in 2008.
